This allowed the young man to graduate with distinction and then Mikhail Maratovich had gone to conquer Moscow in what he succeeded not from the first time. The future oligarch had come to the capital with the objective to enter the prestigious Soviet higher education institution — Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.
But he failed the entrance exams, therefore, he had to return home and choose another institute. Being a student of the third course, Fridman began to be engaged in business activities — he resold theatrical tickets and import goods and also became an animator in his institute. A Ukraine-born Jew who built his business empire amid the cut-throat free-for-all following the break-up of the Soviet Union, he is most widely known in the UK for his bitter, decade-long squabble with BP over a joint Russian oil venture, TNK-BP, and his dispute with the British government over his acquisition in — and then sale — of 12 North Sea gas fields. Things have gone more smoothly since. The result is that in the diaspora, people have become shy to admit they support Israel.
Meanwhile, assimilation and secularisation are thinning out Jewish identity. Jewish society is diluting. His solution? A body of diaspora leaders with a legal mandate to advise the Israeli government on what matters to Jews around the world. At the end of the day, all political decisions should be in the hands of Israelis.
But I think they would carefully listen to a diaspora leader who could deliver very sincere messages about what is going wrong with their policies from their point of view.
At the same time, the Israelis could explain their views. Mr Fridman is pained by the fragmentation of the Jewish world he is describing. His parents were secular because religion was banned by the Soviets. Antisemitic policies also meant he was barred from taking certain jobs and he came to appreciate the importance of Jews helping one another — and that the maintenance of a mutually recognisable identity was itself a survival issue.
His aim to preserve and maintain Jewish life globally is not just a defence mechanism. It is also a positive recipe for living. There have been problems with the initiative. Many potential winners refused to accept a nomination because they did not want to be too closely associated with Israel or — worse — to be handed the award by the Israeli prime minister. We did not know it was such a sensitive issue, especially in Europe [but] also in the US.
This was a very dangerous signal. We always tried to stay on the business side. That balancing act can be seen in his approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. What is clear, he says, is that Ukraine is no longer a good place to work or do business — and Jews are leaving. This is not good for Ukraine, east or west. He sees Jews as a litmus test for a society.
But one phrase stands out. This is the language of a man who, having achieved everything he could have wished for on earth, is looking to reserve his seat in the Jewish firmament. The odds will determine how much you will win in return for the money you bet (stake). Odds are determined by the probability of a certain outcome arriving. Coming into the game, the Sharks topped the regular season table and earned home ground advantage, so they were the favourites.
Bookmakers thought they were the most likely team to win, with Western Province the outsiders and even bigger odds on the draw. The numbers next to each outcome (odds) tells you how much you will receive if that particular result arrives. Your payout is determined by the odds and your stake. In this case, punters who backed the Sharks would win 55c for every Rand they bet. So a R100 bet would return R55, plus your original stake of R100. Anyone who bet on Western Province would get R150 for every R100 bet.
There you have it.

Kristin was amazing from the very start. I had a very positive experience with your company. Christoph was extremely user-friendly in terms of dealing with the one-off aspects of my travel (such as bad-timing associated with being in Edinburgh the same time as the marathon was being run there). That was not a problem at all with Nordic Visitor.
I am a very satisfied customer and only wish that you provided service in destinations I am more likely to visit in the future. I just can't say enough about how amazing Nordic Visitor made our experience. We truly had the best vacation of our lives, and could just enjoy it thanks to everything being taken care of by you all. Kristin's customer service has been exceptional-she was a delight to work with.
I can't say enough good things, so thank you. Thank you for the trip I had been wanting to take since I was about 10 years old (and I'm 71 now).
This was the perfect way for us to see your beautiful country. I hope to return some day to see the things we missed. Thank you for a wonderful vacation, going through Nordic Visitor made our trip easy to plan and go smoothly.
Every question we had you answered. We hope to travel with you again :) Klara really was excellent in answering questions and helping us prepare for our trip. We ended up getting off to a very bad start when we missed our flight on Saturday and could not get another till Monday (totally our fault for missing it). Needless to say with different stays and activities lined up each day, we were quite distraught at the impact this would have. We called the nordic emergency help saturday night and reached Stella Bryndis.
She handled the changes immediately, rebooking stay and activities and really made us feel much better about recovering from our mistake.
In times like this, having good people to work with really provides incredible value. Our thoughts on the nordic staff are just generally "amazing". So we just say thank you to all these fine folks who helped us to visit country we had never been to and one of the most beautiful we have seen.
We were very impressed with the service provided. This was one of the best organised holidays that we have been on having travelled in the USA, Canada and Europe. He accommodated everything we wanted to do, and it was so easy dealing with him. Everything on the trip was absolutely fantastic.
The only thing we wanted was more time!. The holiday was amazing, we loved it so much and both want to move to Iceland. After doing a lot of searching and reading online through various tour companies this was by far the most complete with the most combination of activities that I wanted. Normally, I book everything on my own to try and save money where I can, but having the logistics and bookings handled by someone else was a big relief given such a huge schedule and amount of ground to be covered.
Communication was very good, all questions answered and I was taken care of very well. Tried my hand at the photo of the month contest offered and was lucky enough to win it. Very cool experience and very happy with everything. Would definitely recommend to others and be ready to book more adventures for myself when the time comes. Fantastic experience for a family of 4 - the girls enjoyed it very much.
The weather was great and we saw so many amazing things including the Northern lights :) We all loved it - thanks for arranging.
