When I twist the throttle to accelerate quickly in any gear I hear the engine sound increasing in pitch by a lot more than I'm used to hearing, but the motorcycle doesn't seem to respond and performance is very poor. If I then twist it back to a position of slow acceleration, the engine noise returns to I'm used to hearing still the accelerating noise but a lot lower pitch and the performance also seems to be appropriate to that level of acceleration.

My knowledge of motorcycles is limited so I could be wrong, but it sounds like the clutch is slipping. I realize this question has been answered, but keep in mind that any carbureted engine can bog down under throttle and cause a lack of acceleration. If it can be backed off and regain acceleration, then I'd suggest carb tuning. If the engine revs, but no acceleration then it's a slipping clutch.

There are two cases to be considered here both the carb and the clutch could be culprits here. Let me explain. If the engine warm and is at the normal operating temp and you floor it and no acceleration that means the culprit could be clutch.

If the engine is not warm enough and it has only been about minutes then it is the carb, there is a specific term to explain this phenomenon. In this case you floor the throttle and poor response and if you go easy on the throttle and you get the corresponding acceleration. Before you confirm it is the clutch ride it for about good 30 minutes and then roll the throttle like mad and see which case it falls under.

Hey guys long time hope all is well. So when I finished up my latest bike last summer it was running mint. I stupidly didn't winterize it and left it sitting all winter for all of 5 months. Sometimes it would overcome it and I would gain power back. I figured that maybe the carbs needed to be cleaned so I took it all apart and they were actually not too bad but I cleaned them anyway.

Thought it might be a spark issue- checked my plugs they were fine but changed em anyway. Thought it might be because of old gas so I drained my tank, new fuel, fuel filter and cleaned the carbs out once again.

I just put it back together and was crossing my fingers but nothing! Still sputtering in high end first and second gear, haven't even had it in fourth yet. I thought it might be a vacuum leak so I sprayed some carb cleaner around and couldn't find one.

I really don't know what else to do. One thing I noticed was my rear cylinder head cover has been leaking a little oil but i've been keeping an eye on it.

I put some rtv on it and replaced the gasket and there's still a leak but it has always leaked even last year when it was running fine. The bike is a 92 VLX- velocity stacks open intake, open exhaust no baffles, Rejetted with mains and 45 pilots. Anything i'm missing?

Every crack and crevice with carb cleaner and then blasted them dry with the the compressor. It was already spotless but I cleaned it anyway. I'd bet on a clog still in carbs. Just meticulously cleaned them again, took off every screw and what-not that i could and put it back together. Still nothing I have good gas-flow to the carbs no obstructions. First, check that the mixture screw s on the carburetor are adjusted properly. Backfiring can result if the electrical current is transferred to the wrong contact point at the wrong time. This problem is sometimes referred to as "leakage. If any cracks exist, replace the cap. If the cap is not damaged, make sure the spark plug wires are not mixed up on top of the distributor cap. Refer to the engine's specifications manual to determine the precise placement of each wire on the distributor cap.
