Last, but not least of course, is our look at power, temperatures, and noise levels. While a high performing card is good in its own right, an excellent card can deliver great performance while also keeping power consumption and the resulting noise levels in check. Looking at boost voltages for AMD's new midrange 7nm cards, we don't have too many points of comparison right now.

But still, with AMD's drivers reporting a maximum boost voltage of 1. By contrast, the vanilla is a much more mundane card. With its lower clockspeeds, the card never goes above 1. Which given the impact of voltage on power consumption, it's actually a bit surprising the spread is so large. Meanwhile clockspeeds are also an interesting story. AMD said that they would no longer be holding back their chips' top boost clocks, and instead let the silicon lottery run its course, allowing the best chips to reach their highest clockspeeds.

That said, the XT doesn't have the TDP or thermal cap to susntain this; I couldn't actually hit MHz even in LuxMark, which as a "light" compute workload tends to bring out the highest clockspeeds in processors.

Instead, the best clockspeed I was able to hit was a bit lower, at MHz. So while the silicon is willing, the physics of powering a Navi 10 at such high clockspeeds are another matter. At any rate, even with TDP and cooling keeping the XT more down to earth, the card is still able to hit high clockspeeds.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT Review: Known issues of the reference design

More than half of the games in our benchmark suite average clockspeeds of MHz or better, and a few get to MHz. Even The Division 2, which appears to be the single most punishing game in this year's suite in terms of clockspeeds, holds the line at MHz, right above AMD's official game clock. As for thewith its more conservative TDP, clockspeed specifications, and likely some binning, the card doesn't reach quite as high. Meanwhile its clockspeeds are overall a bit more densely packed than the XT's; all of our games see average clockspeeds between MHz and MHz.

So with the basics done and all of the benchmarks processed, I'm posting this now to let you all see how the RX series did on our testbench, and what my impressions are of the card.

After getting some much-needed sleep, I'll be working on fleshing out the article some tonight, and then later in the week after I return from a further trip. I have 15 pages of notes on everything from threads to video decoding, and I want to get to it all. Privacy Policy. Contact Us. Terms of Use. Show Full Site.

After making these changes the card delivered far more consistent performance albeit with a reduced top speed and unacceptable hair dryer levels of noise. The reference XT is great for beating benchmarks, but it is not so great for playing games. Thousands of people purchased the reference card expecting flagship performance, instead they got a shopping trolley with a V6 engine. It appears that the same marketing tactics were employed for the reference Vega 56 and 64 series of graphics cards which we will purchase for our gaming lab and generate effective Fps gaming metrics as soon as possible results here.

AMD appear to have very short term marketing strategists at the helm, they seem more concerned with this years bonuses than the longevity of the brand.

Normal people dont post comments or "reviews", why would they? Took me a few stings to figure it out. Loses against a 4 year oldbut more expensive.

And this is the top product of AMD - what a company. Nearly unbeatable in terms of price per performance.

Well now that the driver issues are being addressed, I can finally say that I would recommend this card as it is a competitive performer at a competitive price. I am shocked at how powerful this card is, even with the blower on it. Beats out the ti for value and performance, which is saying quite a lot. Fantastic performance for the price! I've been loving gaming at p with this thing.

It's a fantastic card, capable of 60FPS minimum,p with ease. Runs a little hot, but a reasonable case set up for cooling is more than sufficient. Needs a lot of tweaking for full stability but the performance is definitely there.

The best card for the money. It's dollars and compared to the super, when a slight overclock is put onto this card, it outperforms an average super for half the price.

Lots of power, lots of issues. While the RXXT is probably unbeatable for sheer computing power per dollar right now, the horrible, ancient drivers make the cards unbearable to use. I was getting massive tearing when using FreeSync, and the display driver frequently crashed.

Bought about 3 weeks ago been using constantly those 3 weeks for gaming and zero issues; best GPU i have bought yet and a great price for the performence as well. Bought it 2 weeks agogot the MSI Gaming X and with the powerplay mod let me tell you that you wouldnt regret itbeats a stock rtx with ease for almost half the price. See how consistently different GPUs perform with varying real world conditions. There has been some concern in the enthusiast community about the temperatures posted by reference cards, given that these GPUs can report thermal junction temps of up to degrees Celsius.

This is substantially hotter than the old temperature of 95 C, which used to be treated as a thermal trip point. Radeon VII and now Navi do things differently.

Instead of deploying a single sensor, they use a network of sensor data gathered from across the GPU. AVFS deploys a network of on-die sensors across the entire chip rather than relying on a single point of measurement. Rather than calibrating voltages and frequencies at the factory and preprogramming a series of defined voltage and frequency steps that all CPUs must achieve, AVFS dynamically measures and delivers the voltage required for each individual CPU to hit its desired clock frequencies.

This allows for finer-grained power management across the CPU, improving both performance and power efficiency across a range of targets. The degree junction temperature is not evidence of a problem or a sudden issue with AMD graphics cards. AMD now measures its GPU temperature in new locations and reports additional data points that capture this information because it adopted more sophisticated measuring methods.

AMD provides a pair of graphs to illustrate the difference between its Vega 64 and earlier measurement system and how it calibrates voltage on the XT today. The old discrete state method is shown below:. The XT is designed to continue boosting performance until it hits its thermal junction threshold.

Operating at up to C Junction Temperature during typical gaming usage is expected and within spec. This enables the Radeon RX series GPUs to offer much higher performance and clocks out of the box, while maintaining acoustic and reliability targets. Companies like Asus were able to build coolers that handled the R9 X beautifully, so the XT should be tamable as well. Higher temperatures are partially an artifact of better measurement. Our ability to pack transistors closer together has outstripped our ability to reduce their power consumption by cutting operating voltages.

As a result, increasing transistor density increases hot spot formation and higher peak temperatures. Higher temperatures are not an intrinsic reason to be concerned about a product provided the manufacturer certifies that this is expected behavior. When I got into computing, a CPU temperature of 50 C measured via in-socket thermistor was considered extremely high. This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. It more than holds its own against both of Nvidia's competitors, with only thermals and noise being the big drawbacks. There's not any ray tracing to be had here, but I don't think that will be a factor for another year at least. On that front the Nvidia cards are certainly more future proof.

Runs hot but delivers stellar value. The day we've all been waiting for has finally arrived. A second-generation or third? The fallout from that was a last minute price drop for the Radeon cards, though the Radeon GM tweeted it was all a big setup on their part, as they inflated the prices initially and Nvidia took the bait. We'll never know if that really was the plan all along, but either way the GPU wars are officially back on in a very big way.

I also covered most of this from the big reveal at E3but I'll do it again for those who weren't following along. Nvidia's GPUs are currently built on a 12nm process, so by going with a smaller node AMD can put more transistors in the same space with better efficiency.

IGN Logo Recommends. It's the Beginning of the End for Clone Wars.Navi vs. The 7-nm Navi 10 chip is more energy-efficient than Polaris and Vega chips. The GPU performs as expected and is well-suited for p gaming. Therefore, AMD is still ahead of the curve when it comes to the implementation of new features.

Why 110-Degree Temps Are Normal for AMD’s Radeon 5700, 5700 XT

This also applies to the PCI Express 4. However, if you want to be able to take advantage of the PCI Express 4. We will talk about whether or not Nvidia succeeded in this later. A vapor chamber is located right above the GPU die to facilitate the removal of excess heat.

Best Displaysfor University Students. Our test bench is based on a current AMD platform. The system is cooled by an all-in-one water cooler from Be Quiet Silent Loop mm.

We are very grateful to AMD for providing us with the above-mentioned system. The base clock of the reference model is MHz and the maximum boost clock is MHz. There is also the game clock MHzwhich is an average core clock that users should expect to see in most games. This was a good choice, especially in terms of keeping the costs down.

The significantly higher manufacturing costs of the Vega 64 do not seem to result in any sort of significant performance advantage. The synthetic benchmarks reveal the true performance of a GPU.

However, such benchmarks are not a good proxy for the kind of performance a GPU can achieve in actual games. Our gaming benchmarks confirm this. While the RX XT can achieve playable frame rates at p, it struggles to keep its head above water at p. However, there are a few titles that are playable in UHD on medium to high settings. However, there are titles in which both graphics cards achieve a very similar level of performance.

It cannot handle higher resolutions, though. We use The Witcher 3 to examine how well the graphics card performs under load. We run the game on ultra settings and record both the frame rate and the frame time.

There are fewer spikes in the frame-time graph, and the spikes that we did measure should not be noticeable during actual gameplay. The same applies to the frame rate. Even though we did observe a slight drop in the frame rate due to thermal issues, 92 FPS is still way more than enough for the game to feel very smooth. Navi 10 Chip source: AMD. Gaming Benchmarks. That drawn-out tease definitely worked against AMD last generation.

By the time Radeon RX Vega landed in our lab, expectations had boiled over beyond what the card could deliver, particularly at its cryptocurrency-affected prices. AMD is clearly feeling good enough about its performance story to go up against the GeForces at identical pricing.

Are either of these Radeons among the best graphics cards or is AMD underestimating the appeal of real-time ray tracing support? Vega was much larger. Four render back-ends per quadrant are capable of 16 pixels per clock cycle, yielding 64 ROPs. The reminder falls under design frequency and power improvement, which includes more effective clock gating. After subjecting the XT to synthetic workloads like FurMark, however, and observing frequencies as low as 1, MHz, it appears that the base can be violated under the right or wrong conditions, favoring a consistent acoustic experience over strict performance boundaries.

In fact, we saw Boost frequencies well above 1, MHz at the start of many games. As the card warms up, though, expect to see clock rates closer to the Game GPU clock.

In fact, AMD is already using that peak figure to calculate its 9. Navi does carry over support for rapid-packed math, so AMD cites half-precision performance of up to Representatives claim the contour design helps optimize airflow and minimize acoustic output, and we can attest that the XT is one of the quietest AMD reference cards we've tested.

One end is open, facilitating ambient air intake, yet is still decorated with red pinstripes, Radeon branding, and black-painted aluminum fins. The other end is loaded with slats for ventilation. Three DisplayPort 1. Another pair of pin stripes add a sporty accent, while that Radeon logo lights up red. Ambient air is pulled in to the 70mm centrifugal fan and blown through an array of aluminum fins sitting on top of a vapor chamber cooler.

The heated air is exhausted out the back of your chassis rather than recirculated. Of course, the downside of this design is more noise than many axial fan-based solutions and less airflow, resulting in higher GPU temperatures. The Nvidia card is roughly 9 inches long in comparison. Radeon RX is a close relative of the higher-end model. An aluminum shroud does wrap around the cooler, including its back edge.

That's fine by us; the clean colors and lines look good. A W board power rating justifies eight- and six-pin auxiliary connectors up top, along with the same 70mm blower-style fan and vapor chamber cooler found on Radeon RX XT.

Under the hood, Navi is trimmed down slightly. Of course, this required building a new library of data with a limited amount of time to do it. Home Reviews. Image 1 of 2. Image 2 of 2. See all comments Hard pass on another blower. Dear AMD, Why? Regrettably yours, Your Fans. ICWiener said:. I'm pleasantly surprised by both the performance AND the last-minute drop in price. But what if we pushed the new hardware to its limits? Of course, the GPU silicon has to be good enough to do 2.

We saw the limit at 2. After an hour-long F1 loop, the XT in its stock configuration with the reference blower-style cooler runs at around MHz.

The card reaches its peak operating temperature of 84 degrees in a room with a 21 C ambient temperature. Under the same conditions with EK Vector block installed and attached to a mm radiator with two quiet mm fans, the XT peaked at just 45 C. We tried a few other tweak profiles but the same 2.

This allowed the XT at 2. DiRT Rally 2. In other words, the 2. To put it bluntly, that was disappointing. By simply looking at the power consumption of the otherwise very efficient 7nm Navi architecture, we've learned why AMD has put the restrictions on the frequency these cards can run at. The Radeon RX XT is a great product and offers really good value, and we have high hopes for the upcoming AIB models that will let you run the cards cooler out of the box.

On the other hand, your chances of pushing this thing to RTX Super or even vanilla levels of performance are slim -- even at 2. That one is up to you and your interest in getting a custom liquid cooling setup. A third option would be to wait for board partners to release better air-cooled XTs, and frankly that option makes the most sense. We have tested our XT boards with decent air coolers and they will still run at 2.
