Last, but not least of course, is our look at power, temperatures, and noise levels. While a high performing card is good in its own right, an excellent card can deliver great performance while also keeping power consumption and the resulting noise levels in check. Looking at boost voltages for AMD's new midrange 7nm cards, we don't have too many points of comparison right now.
But still, with AMD's drivers reporting a maximum boost voltage of 1. By contrast, the vanilla is a much more mundane card. With its lower clockspeeds, the card never goes above 1. Which given the impact of voltage on power consumption, it's actually a bit surprising the spread is so large. Meanwhile clockspeeds are also an interesting story. AMD said that they would no longer be holding back their chips' top boost clocks, and instead let the silicon lottery run its course, allowing the best chips to reach their highest clockspeeds.
That said, the XT doesn't have the TDP or thermal cap to susntain this; I couldn't actually hit MHz even in LuxMark, which as a "light" compute workload tends to bring out the highest clockspeeds in processors.
Instead, the best clockspeed I was able to hit was a bit lower, at MHz. So while the silicon is willing, the physics of powering a Navi 10 at such high clockspeeds are another matter. At any rate, even with TDP and cooling keeping the XT more down to earth, the card is still able to hit high clockspeeds.

More than half of the games in our benchmark suite average clockspeeds of MHz or better, and a few get to MHz. Even The Division 2, which appears to be the single most punishing game in this year's suite in terms of clockspeeds, holds the line at MHz, right above AMD's official game clock. As for thewith its more conservative TDP, clockspeed specifications, and likely some binning, the card doesn't reach quite as high. Meanwhile its clockspeeds are overall a bit more densely packed than the XT's; all of our games see average clockspeeds between MHz and MHz.

So with the basics done and all of the benchmarks processed, I'm posting this now to let you all see how the RX series did on our testbench, and what my impressions are of the card.

After making these changes the card delivered far more consistent performance albeit with a reduced top speed and unacceptable hair dryer levels of noise. Well now that the driver issues are being addressed, I can finally say that I would recommend this card as it is a competitive performer at a competitive price. I am shocked at how powerful this card is, even with the blower on it. Beats out the ti for value and performance, which is saying quite a lot. Fantastic performance for the price! I've been loving gaming at p with this thing.
It's a fantastic card, capable of 60FPS minimum,p with ease. Runs a little hot, but a reasonable case set up for cooling is more than sufficient. Needs a lot of tweaking for full stability but the performance is definitely there.
The best card for the money. It's dollars and compared to the super, when a slight overclock is put onto this card, it outperforms an average super for half the price.
Lots of power, lots of issues. While the RXXT is probably unbeatable for sheer computing power per dollar right now, the horrible, ancient drivers make the cards unbearable to use. I was getting massive tearing when using FreeSync, and the display driver frequently crashed.

See how consistently different GPUs perform with varying real world conditions.There has been some concern in the enthusiast community about the temperatures posted by reference cards, given that these GPUs can report thermal junction temps of up to degrees Celsius.
This is substantially hotter than the old temperature of 95 C, which used to be treated as a thermal trip point. Radeon VII and now Navi do things differently.
Instead of deploying a single sensor, they use a network of sensor data gathered from across the GPU. AVFS deploys a network of on-die sensors across the entire chip rather than relying on a single point of measurement. Rather than calibrating voltages and frequencies at the factory and preprogramming a series of defined voltage and frequency steps that all CPUs must achieve, AVFS dynamically measures and delivers the voltage required for each individual CPU to hit its desired clock frequencies.
This allows for finer-grained power management across the CPU, improving both performance and power efficiency across a range of targets. The degree junction temperature is not evidence of a problem or a sudden issue with AMD graphics cards. AMD now measures its GPU temperature in new locations and reports additional data points that capture this information because it adopted more sophisticated measuring methods.
AMD provides a pair of graphs to illustrate the difference between its Vega 64 and earlier measurement system and how it calibrates voltage on the XT today. The old discrete state method is shown below:. The XT is designed to continue boosting performance until it hits its thermal junction threshold.
Operating at up to C Junction Temperature during typical gaming usage is expected and within spec. This enables the Radeon RX series GPUs to offer much higher performance and clocks out of the box, while maintaining acoustic and reliability targets. Companies like Asus were able to build coolers that handled the R9 X beautifully, so the XT should be tamable as well. Higher temperatures are partially an artifact of better measurement. Our ability to pack transistors closer together has outstripped our ability to reduce their power consumption by cutting operating voltages.
It more than holds its own against both of Nvidia's competitors, with only thermals and noise being the big drawbacks. There's not any ray tracing to be had here, but I don't think that will be a factor for another year at least. On that front the Nvidia cards are certainly more future proof.
Runs hot but delivers stellar value. The day we've all been waiting for has finally arrived. A second-generation or third? The fallout from that was a last minute price drop for the Radeon cards, though the Radeon GM tweeted it was all a big setup on their part, as they inflated the prices initially and Nvidia took the bait. We'll never know if that really was the plan all along, but either way the GPU wars are officially back on in a very big way.

However, such benchmarks are not a good proxy for the kind of performance a GPU can achieve in actual games. Our gaming benchmarks confirm this. While the RX XT can achieve playable frame rates at p, it struggles to keep its head above water at p. However, there are a few titles that are playable in UHD on medium to high settings. However, there are titles in which both graphics cards achieve a very similar level of performance.
It cannot handle higher resolutions, though. We use The Witcher 3 to examine how well the graphics card performs under load. We run the game on ultra settings and record both the frame rate and the frame time.
There are fewer spikes in the frame-time graph, and the spikes that we did measure should not be noticeable during actual gameplay. The same applies to the frame rate. By the time Radeon RX Vega landed in our lab, expectations had boiled over beyond what the card could deliver, particularly at its cryptocurrency-affected prices. AMD is clearly feeling good enough about its performance story to go up against the GeForces at identical pricing.
Are either of these Radeons among the best graphics cards or is AMD underestimating the appeal of real-time ray tracing support? Vega was much larger. We saw the limit at 2. After an hour-long F1 loop, the XT in its stock configuration with the reference blower-style cooler runs at around MHz.

A third option would be to wait for board partners to release better air-cooled XTs, and frankly that option makes the most sense. We have tested our XT boards with decent air coolers and they will still run at 2.
